al·che·my /ˈalkəmē/

a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination

The ALCHEMY Project transforms one art form into another through commissioning, performing, and recording flute & guitar repertoire inspired by artistic works from non-music disciplines—such as paintings and poetry— significant to the composers involved.

Funded by a project grant from the Regional Arts & Culture Council, ALCHEMY features new works for flute and guitar that the Cerulean Duo is commissioning from:

  • Latin GRAMMY nominee CLARICE ASSAD, Brazilian-American vocalist, pianist, arranger and contemporary composer

  • Composer, 7-string electric guitarist, and Portland Oregon native JAY DERDERIAN

  • MICHAEL JOHANSON, Lewis & Clark College’s Department Chair and Associate Professor of Music, Director of Composition and Music Theory

  • And our very own guitarist, composer, and arranger, MARIO DÍAZ

More info to come on additional works, as well as performance dates and the album release scheduled for Spring 2020!
